National Education Union members at Flixton Girls School are taking strike action in response to a proposed restructure and potential redundancies that threaten the quality and continuity of pupils’ education. This industrial action is a measured and considered response to unresolved concerns and aims to protect both staff roles and the learning conditions that support excellent outcomes for every student.

Key reasons for the strike

  • Proposed redundancies: Cuts risk losing experienced teachers and support staff whose roles are vital to curriculum delivery, pastoral care, and safeguarding.

  • Threat to curriculum breadth and continuity: Reductions in staffing could force the school to narrow subject choices, increase class sizes, and disrupt course progression for current pupils.

  • Long-term sustainability of education: Staff are calling for a plan that secures stable working conditions and staffing structures that allow teachers to plan, deliver, and assess high‑quality learning.

  • Unresolved consultation: Union members consider the consultation process inadequate and believe their professional concerns and alternative proposals have not been meaningfully addressed.

What the action seeks to achieve

  • Withdrawal or revision of proposals that would lead to unnecessary redundancies.

  • A collaborative review process that genuinely engages teachers, support staff, governors, parents and unions to identify alternatives to cuts.

  • Protection of curriculum breadth, class sizes and pastoral provision to ensure every pupil receives the education they need.

  • A sustainable staffing model and investment in resources that enable excellent teaching and learning.

Context and purpose

The strike is intended as a last resort after attempts to resolve issues through the formal consultation process. It is a lawful, proportionate means for staff to demonstrate the seriousness of their concerns and to press for constructive negotiation. The aim is not to disrupt education but to secure a settlement that protects jobs, maintains curriculum quality, and creates the stable conditions necessary for pupils to thrive.

NEU members remain open to genuine talks and will return to work when they have confidence that pupils’ education and staff livelihoods are safeguarded.

We invite parents and members of the local community to join and support the picket lines. Your presence demonstrates solidarity with staff working to protect the school’s long‑term well-being and the quality of education our students deserve. Please respect the peaceful nature of the action and follow any guidance from staff and stewards on site. Further details, including times and meeting points, will be shared by the union and school in advance of each planned day of action.
