Heatwave

Extreme weather and rising heat mean schools and colleges must prepare to protect pupils and staff and maintain learning. This protocol helps employers and unions agree short- and long-term steps to reduce disruption, safeguard health and welfare, and identify building improvements that boost comfort and cut energy costs. It follows DfE, Acas and UKHSA guidance, aligns with health and safety duties, and notes DfE lists “extreme heat” as an emergency. The short-term actions below give practical, proportionate steps for assessing site-specific risks and selecting suitable measures.

Members are encouraged to get in contact with your local workplace rep or H&S rep if you begin to feel unsafe as a result of the heat.
